Two of the biggest stars in sports making unfathomable changes?
Two of arguably the biggest stars in sports will be playing in different uniforms this upcoming season.
LeBron James, currently considered the best basketball player in the world by many, has just agreed to a 4-year, $154 million dollar max contract deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. This deal now puts James over $1 billion dollars in career earnings as a basketball player in the NBA. James had stated, prior to signing, that his next move will be catering to his family and his brand. James and his family already owned homes in Los Angeles and were residents during the summer, so James and his family were pretty familiar with the area. Also, James is developing his skills as a producer, actor, and etc. Given this, going to Hollywood realistically made sense for his career and life AFTER basketball.
Considered the greatest soccer player in the world, Christiano Ronaldo just agreed to a four year-contract worth $30 million per season. The irony of it all as that on this exact day 9 years ago, Ronaldo was introduced as a player for the football club Real Madrid. Adding to this intrigue, Ronaldo just wrapped up a World Cup trip after losing in the round of 16. There had, admittedly, been talks about Ronaldo going to Juventus for a long time now, but those talks would die down as nothing would happen. Last year, it was reported that Ronaldo had faced tax evasion charges in Spain. Ronaldo avoided jail time and is on probation due to his clean record prior to the charges. It seems as if Ronaldo's move to Juventus, which is based in Italy, could be that fresh start he sorely needs.
The similarities in both off-season moves are worth considering. Two great players who have both won titles with two teams, two big cities (Los Angeles, Italy),two huge contracts are starting over and will wear new uniforms. At age 33, both James and Ronaldo are making what could be their last moves in their respective sports. It will be interesting to see how both players fair with their new teams. Will James and Ronaldo capture sports titles with their third teams? While nothing is promised, nothing is given, and everything is earned, one thing is for sure: the world will be watching to see the unfolding of their third acts. How will they close? And most importantly, how will such changes be remembered?
