QB Alex Smith retiring from football

Former 49ers, Chiefs, and Football Team QB Alex Smith has decided to hang up his cleats after 16 years in the NFL. Smith made the announcement earlier today on his Instagram.

Upon making his decision, Smith stated he took a trip to the Jacksonville Jaguars facility and was considering signing there before ultimately choosing to retire. Smith played for Urban Meyers years ago at Utah where Smith won the Fiesta Bowl with him.

Alex Smith was not even suppose to play the game of football again after suffering a gruesome, life-threatening leg fracture back in 2018. Smith had to get 17 surgeries for that injury alone. After missing the year, Smith powered back, rehabbed, and played in 8 games for the Redskins this past season, leading them to the playoffs although he would get hurt before the first round and miss the game.

Smith would win the Comeback player of the year award for his valiant effort this past season and finished his career with 3 Pro Bowl appearances, 35,650 passing yards, and 199 passing touchdowns plus 15 rushing touchdowns.

I personally would love to see Smith get into maybe sports analysis or even coaching to still be around the game. Smith definitely if respected widely by players, coaches, and commentators worldwide after embarking such a journey that could’ve costed him his life. There were once talks stating that Smith could possibly have his leg amputated. However, Alex Smith stayed persistent and did not give up. He rehabbed and trained hard to come back and was able to successfully play football again.

People in general can learn some valuable lessons from Alex Smith’s story. The will to not give up even when the odds are against you and adversity floods your way. Smith’s story is truly powerful, I congratulate him on a wonderful career and cannot wait to see what’s next for him.
